How I Created a Philz Coffee Spec Campaign That Connects Mindfulness and Ritual

What do coffee snobs and modern hippies have in common?This was the creative question that sparked my Philz Coffee spec ad campaign—and led me down a path of brand discovery, emotional insight, and copywriting clarity.

Step One: Defining the Audience
When I began this project, I wanted to design a campaign that spoke to two distinct but passionate Philz audiences:
Coffee connoisseurs who care about beans, brewing methods, and flavor rituals.
Mindful consumers who value presence, connection, and intention in their daily lives.
To visualize where these groups aligned, I sketched a Venn diagram.Right in the middle? Three words:
Ritual. Mindfulness. Connection.
Step Two: Understanding the Philz Brand Experience
I took a deep dive into what makes Philz Coffee unique—and discovered that it isn’t just about coffee. It’s about personalized service, and a deeper sense of care and intention.
Every cup is made to order.
Baristas mix in your milk and sugar for you.
Customers are invited to reflect—how sweet, how creamy, how bold do they want their day to start?
That moment between barista and customer is personal and reflective. It's not just a transaction—it's a pause. A breath.
Step Three: Connecting Ritual and Mindfulness
This connection led to the creation of the campaign's central concept: “Your Mindful [Blank]”
Coffee lovers have rituals—grinding, brewing, savoring. Mindful consumers seek rituals too—journaling, pausing, reflecting.
Philz becomes the bridge between both:
Your Mindful Morning
Your Mindful Refresh
Your Mindful Catch-Up
Your Mindful First Draft
The concept supports both the emotional needs and brand truth of Philz—positioning it as a coffee brand that’s not only delicious but deeply human.

Final Takeaway: Copywriting Rooted in Empathy
This spec campaign taught me a lot about what great copy does:

✅ It aligns with the brand’s values.
✅ It tells a story beyond the product.
